If the election comes down to McCain versus Obama, the Dems will be in the unusual position of having the candidate that speaks comfortably, with conviction, about matters of personal faith. I am bracing for a flock of stories and campaign salvos that cast aspersions on Obama’s religion, his denomination, his congregation, and his pastor. But overall this exposure will be good for the UCC, as it will introduce millions of Americans to the idea that there is such as thing as progressive Christianity and even progressive Christian denominations. And it won’t hurt Obama to have to keep saying, “Yes, my Christian faith is important to me…”
