Rep. Fortney “Pete” Stark, D-Calif., will be taking home the “Humanist of the Year” award from the American Humanist Association’s annual conference this weekend. Stark, you may remember, is the first openly nontheistic (psstâÂ?¦that means he doesn’t believe in God) member of Congress, according to the AHA. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-GA, is a Buddhist, so technically … but I digress.

The AHA “outed” Stark in a contest type thing last year, when the longtime congressman from San Francisco’s East Bay responded to a questionnaire sent to public officials. He calls himself “a Unitarian who does not believe in a supreme being.”

Other notables to be awarded by the AHA’s 67th annual conference in Washington this weekend: Philip Pullman, of “His Dark Materials” fame; Judge John E. Jones, the Dover, PA., judge who bodyslammed “intelligent design;” and evrabody’s favorite atheist Christopher Hitchens.

Sound divine.
