The transformation of L’Osservatore Romano under Gian Maria Vian, who took over as editor of the official Vatican newspaper last fall, continues to astonish.

What used to be largely a compilation of official announcements, most interesting for between-the-lines hints at Vatican politics and policy, is now a modern newspaper embracing the whole range of contemporary experience (albeit from the point of view of the Holy See).

The top story in tomorrow’s edition, for instance, is about the FBI’s Wall Street crackdown, Operation “Malicious Mortgage.”
