In the latest sign of the ever-more global character of the world’s most global church, the official Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano will now appear in the Indian language of Malayalam.

The weekly, which will be a translation of the paper’s exisiting English edition, brings to eight the number of languages in which L’Osservatore appears. It will be the first edition printed in non-Latin characters.

According to an article in Thursday’s issue of the daily (Italian) version, the Malayalam edition is aimed at readers in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where Catholics make up one fifth of the population (i.e., over 6 million people).
