One of the true pleasures of my life was taking a Tibetan Buddhism course taught by Robert Thurman in 2004. You never knew whether the former monk, friend of Dalai Lama and father of Uma, would delve into esoteric tantric texts, tell a funny anecdote about His Holiness, or fire up a rant against the military-industrial complex. He’s truly a fascinating man.

Last week, the NY Times magazine caught up with Thurman for a Q & A that reveals some of his zany intelligence.

For instance, there’s this response to a question about what he thinks about while meditating:


“Usually, some form of trying to excavate any kind of negative thing cycling in the mind and turn it toward the positive. For example, when I am annoyed with Dick Cheney, I meditate on how Dick Cheney was my mother in a previous life and nursed me at his breast. “
