The American Family Association’s “auto-replace” filter led its OneNewsNow.com Web site to re-report some news with some incorrect information, reported Al Kamen in The Washington Post’s “In the Loop” column.

The conservative Christian group has not liked using the term “gay” and asked its filter to change all references to the term to “homosexual.” But a problem, discovered by liberal watchdog group People for the American Way, developed when news stories on the Web site actually referred to people whose names include the word “gay.”

Thus, a wire story about track star Tyson Gay initially began “Tyson Homosexual easily won his semifinal for the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trialsâÂ?¦”

Explained OneNewsNow.com news director Fred Jackson: “We don’t have the staff to monitor all the Hollywood stories, so we wanted an automated function.”

The sprinter’s name was later corrected and Jackson said “gay” is no longer in their “auto-replace” filter.
