VATICAN CITY-Pope Benedict XVI left the academic life behind more than 30 years ago, but at least once a year he resumes his role as teacher, at a late-summer meeting with his former graduate students. The Ratzinger Schulerkreis, or “student circle,” gives Benedict a chance to pursue some of his wide-ranging theological interests. Past topics have included the religious implications of evolution and Christianity’s relationship with Islam. For this year’s session, which will take place Aug. 30 at the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, the pope has invited two Protestant theologians to lecture the group on the life and death of Jesus, the subject of Benedict’s book-in-progress.
