ChristianityToday.com’s Sarah Pulliam has noted the warming of relations between evangelicals and Mormons during their recent joint push for passage of California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. This came after some evangelicals were cool to a presidential candidacy of a Mormon, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Said Mark DeMoss, an evangelical publicist who supported Romney: “I think this is the ironic part, because everybody seems very content to work together on these issues of common values. But the moment a Mormon man presented himself as a candidate for President, people said, ‘That’s a line we as evangelicals can’t cross.’ “

While some wonder if the recent rapprochement might signal a potential smoother run for Romney in the future, others think that’s not likely.

Said Roger Keller, church history professor at Brigham Young University: “Joining hands on the moral issues can only help, but it doesn’t get at the root issues that are the things that evangelicals and Mormons need to talk about, which are doctrinal issues. Romney will always encounter a theological divide if and when he runs again.”
