The Obamas weren’t the only political family scouting out pews on Sunday. Joe and Jill Biden attended Mass at Georgetown’s Holy Trinity Catholic Church, which from my experience of DC Catholic churches, is a pretty good fit.

As the AP points out in their story, it’s the same church frequented by John F. Kennedy (including the morning of his 1961 inauguration). It’s also the preferred pew of Washington’s political and media Catholic elite-it’s where they held Tim Russert’s funeral last summer. Ideologically, Holy Trinity leans to the left but they’re not radicals. They’re Jesuits, affiliated with Georgetown University across the street. It was one of the few DC churches, for example, to allow the lay reform group Voice of the Faithful to meet on church premises back in 2002 when the clergy sex abuse scandal erupted.

And yes, both Bidens received Communion. Not to mention a standing ovation.
