SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (RNS) Three white men who were arrested for allegedly setting fire to a black church hours after President Obama’s election were indicted Tuesday (Jan. 27) in federal court.

The three men-Benjamin F. Haskell, 22; Michael F. Jacques, 24; and Thomas A. Gleason Jr., 21-had been released Monday on $100,000 bail each after spending 11 days in jail.

The three were arrested on Jan. 16 and charged with conspiracy to violate the civil rights of the Macedonia Church of God in Christ, a black Pentecostal church that was destroyed by fire just hours after Obama’s election.

In documents unsealed after the trio’s arrest, an FBI agent said two of the defendants expressed racial motives for setting fire to the 18,000 square-foot building.

On Monday afternoon, Gleason emerged from the courthouse, accompanied by his mother. He refused to comment.

About 75 minutes later, Jacques walked out of the court with his mother and father. “No comment,” Jacques said, before adding: “Have a nice day.”

Haskell was released earlier in the day.
