Discover magazine says the Vatican is giving Charles Darwin a big birthday hug today, even saying that his theory of evolution can be traced, in part, to the writings of Sts. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas.

Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi says both Catholic intellectuals recognized that the big fish eat the little fish and that life forms change slowly over time, a step toward understanding evolution. Hmm, I don’t know. The Catholic Church didn’t exactly embrace Darwin’s theory when it was published 150 years ago.
