Newsweek has a story about former Goldman Sachs banker and economist Dambisa Moyo whose new book, “Dead Aid,” challenges the message of Bono and of other celebrities in favor of sending Western aid to the impoverished nation of Africa.

Western aid to Africa is actually detrimental and kills any potential for the nation to flourish with its own enterprise, she says.

Moneyquote: “The problem that Africa is really suffering from is negative PR. If there is a criticism I would level against celebrities-they have tended to perpetuate negative stereotypes. They always tend to portray Africa as a horrendous basket case. They want to portray the war, the poverty, the disease, the corruption. As an African, I’m tired of it…Taking a picture with a starving African child-that doesn’t help me raise an African child to believe she can be an engineer or a doctor.”

Bono begs to differ with Moyo saying that she is targeting celebrities just to market her book.

The New York Times featured Moyo in a February 2009 interview in which she said that African poverty gets overplayed in comparison to other impoverished countries like China.
