The Hill reports that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) has officially made the switch from his Baptist faith to Catholicism. He joins his Catholic wife, Calista, in the faith. After his conversion proccess was officially complete at Mass, he celebrated with some close friends at Café Milano, a local D.C. favorite of many DC lawmakers, lobbyists, and journalists.

Word is that Gingrich’s marriages to Mrs. Gingrich #1 and Mrs. Gingrich #2 were annulled — something that Mrs. Gingrich #2 was apparently none too happy about.

Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.), who is also a Catholic, was also coincidentally dining at the same restaurant. He, as The Hill reports, didn’t appear to be celebrating with Gingrich’s group.

While the former speaker has kept silent about his conversion according to Dan Gilfoff’s “God and Country” blog, it will be interesting to watch the potential sway he will have over the Catholic vote if he chooses to make a 2012 presidential bid against possible future incumbent President Obama. Exit poll analysis by the Pew Forum of last November’s presidential election shows that President Barack Obama won 54% of the Catholic vote.
