You may remember Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Mo., from last year, when he warned Catholics that a vote for then-candidate Barack Obama put their eternal salvation in question, if not outright peril. The man sure does know how to get attention.

Finn keynoted a pro-life dinner last Saturday in which he depicted the battle over abortion in stark us-vs.-them, good-vs.-evil language. Nothing of what he said struck me as necessarily out of line with mainstream Catholic theology, but the man-your-battlestations realm of spiritual warfare has always been the specialty of evangelicals more so than Catholics.

Finn stresses that “our enemy is the deceiver, the liar, Satan” but is pretty clear in his description of who’s working for the Lord of the Underworld, or as he calls them, our “human enemies” : “Persons who wish to establish a path of living which contravenes God’s law: promoting abortion; unnatural substitutes for marriage, and all such distortions of true freedom.”
