Miss California, Carrie Prejean, says the twinkly crown of Miss USA almost seduced her into giving a politically correct answer to a contest question about gay marriage.

Instead, as she tells Focus on the Family’s James Dobson, she fended off the thorny devil and stayed true to her conservative Christian roots.

“I felt as though Satan was trying to tempt me in asking me this question. And then God was in my head and in my heart saying, `Do not compromise this. You need to stand up for me and you need to share with all these people . . . you need to witness to them and you need to show that you’re not willing to compromise that for this title of Miss USA.'”

The temptations of a crown, the durn-the-consequences fidelity to faith…this is starting to sound like a modern, evangelical version of “MacBeth” meets “A Man for All Seasons.” Somewhere Tom Perrotta is smiling.

This picture is not meant to imply that Michael Phelps is Satan, though he does look a little devilish.
