The former Catholic Archbishop of Milwaukee, Rembert Weakland, who resigned amid a sex scandal in 2002, admits in a new book that he’s gay, according to the AP and Publisher’s Weekly.

Says the AP: “The book, `A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church: Memoirs of a Catholic Archbishop,’ is set to be released in June and is described by the publisher as a self-examination by Weakland of his `psychological, spiritual and sexual growth’

The Vatican says that men with `deep-seated’ attraction to other men should not be ordained.”


Weakland resigned in 2002 after it was disclosed that he had paid out almost $500,000 in hush money to a former Marquette University theology student.

The Milwaukee archdiocese released a statement about the book last week, saying “The book will undoubtedly spark a variety of emotions in Catholics throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Some people will be angry about the book, others will support it.”
