“Father Oprah” (a.ka. Rev. Alberto Cutie) has given his first sermon in an Episcopal pulpit, tho he’s not yet an Episcopal priest and won’t be for at least another year.

(Cutie, you’ll recall, is the formerly Catholic priest with Hollywood good-looks and an Oprahesque media presence who plans to join the Episcopal Church after he could no longer tolerate the vow of celibacy.)

From the AP:

The Rev. Alberto Cutie gave the sermon at the Episcopal Church of The Resurrection in Miami. Episcopalian priests can marry, unlike their Catholic counterparts.

The former priest received a standing ovation and told several jokes, quipping at one point that “my stuff is in storage.” He didn’t directly address his split with the church.

“The spirit of God has been with me,” he said. “And I’m going to tell you something: God is the only one we follow.”

The AP notes that Cutie has not said whether he plans to marry the woman at the center of the media storm, Ruhama Buni Canellis. The Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida has repeated referred to her as his fiancee, so we’re taking that on pretty good authority that they do intend to tie the knot.
