Carl Hiassen, the Miami Herald columnist and mystery writer, has a great quote that speaks to Alberto Cutie’s popularity and the poignancy of his conversion to Episcopalianism.

“For the Miami archdiocese, losing Father Cutié to the Episcopalians would be like the Yankees losing Derek Jeter to the Red Sox.”

The Red Sox learned the pain of such conversions when they failed to win a championship for 86 years after trading Babe Ruth to the Bronx Bombers.


I’m trying to imagine what the ecclesiastical equivalent of the Curse of the Bambino might be. Eighty more years of Dan Brown novels and declining vocations?
