The ELCA’s news service has a story about Dr. George Tiller’s funeral, which is scheduled for Saturday (June 6).

“All the different stages and symptoms of grief are happening here,” said the Rev. Lowell R. Michelson, senior pastor for Reformation Lutheran Church, where Tiller was a member. A team of crisis intervention specialists is meeting with members of Reformation in groups and individually this week, said the pastor.

Michelson is also preparing to preach the funeral sermon. He said the family selected verses from the Gospel of John, in which Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.”

The family has requested that the funeral not be held at Reformation, where Tiller was shot while ushering last Sunday. Instead it will be at College Hill United Methodist Church, where there is more seating, according to the ELCA’s story.

The Tiller family’s lawyer, Dan Monnat, said the funeral will be open to the public, but his family has requested that no video or audio recording be allowed during any portion of the service. Security is expected to be tight.
