Last Friday, you may have seen our post about Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori denouncing the modern “heresy” of individual salvation. Not surprisingly, that raised the ire of the conservative Episcopal remnant.

Now the scion of the evangelical Falwell dynasty, Jonathan Falwell, has weighed in with his thoughts. Interestingly, he doesn’t really denounce Jefferts Schori as a heretic per se, but kind of blandly uses Scripture passages to refute her. And here I was expecting a little more fire and brimstone to be flying out of Lynchburg.

Here’s the quick take (full version here):

“I am troubled by this caution regarding personal salvation through Jesus Christ. Everything in Christianity depends on the Gospel-the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ-and how each person responds to Christ’s calling to accept it. Jesus depicts Himself as the great Shepherd who wants to protect the flock (the church) collectively, yes, but also each sheep individually. We see Him in Scripture meticulously seeking out individual sheep that have escaped the flock.”

One quick aside: Falwell needs a copy editor. It’s Katharine, not Katherine.
