So, Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council are gearing up for their annual Values Voter Summit in Washington and getting an early jump on Iowa and New Hampshire by holding the first unofficial election of the 2012 presidential campaign.

And here’s a surprise: all the candidates on the straw ballot are (drum roll, please) … Republicans. From the press release:

The ballot will feature 10 possible presidential candidates, several of whom will be speaking at the Summit, who have also exhibited leadership on key issues: Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Pence, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum.

“The 2012 presidential primaries may be several years away but many value voters are already surveying the field of possible candidates,” said Family Research Council Action President Tony Perkins. “This straw poll is an early test for possible presidential contenders who have shown leadership on the major issues facing our country.”

(In all fairness to Perkins, I suppose the main reason there are no Democrats on the ballot — they certainly wouldn’t be comfortable, or welcome, in the room — is that one can (probably) safely assume Obama has the 2012 Democratic nomination more or less sewn up.)
