(RNS) Bob Abernethy, host of the PBS show “Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly,” will be the recipient of a special Wilbur Award from the Religion Communicators Council.

Abernethy will receive the honor during the Religion Communication Congress 2010 in April in Chicago. He will be recognized for the contribution he and the television program have made to the public discussion of issues of faith.

“Since 1997, Bob has promoted intelligent, insightful examinations of faith issues on American public television,” RCC President Douglas F. Cannon said in an announcement.

“As executive editor and host of `Religion & Ethics Newsweekly,’ he has shown that the spiritual side of America is important and deserves journalistic attention.”

Since 1949, the Wilbur Awards have honored excellence by individuals in secular media in communicating religious values, issues and themes. “Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly” has won Wilbur Awards for outstanding national television coverage of religion news four times since 1998.
