(RNS) The Episcopal Church has promoted a Wisconsin priest to be its new ecumenical and inter-religious officer.

The Rev. Thomas Ferguson of Madison, Wis., will work for Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who is considered the chief ecumenical officer of the 2.1-million-member church.

Ferguson, who was ordained last year, had been the interim head of the office, and a deputy for ecumenical and inter-religious relations in the Episcopal Church since 2001. Bishop Christopher Epting headed the office from 2001-2009.

“Given many of the changes we are facing in society, our ecumenical and interreligious engagement is of critical importance to the life of the church,” Ferguson said in a statement.
