(RNS) After 17 years as head of the Reformed Church in America, the Rev. Wesley Granberg-Michaelson announced Tuesday (July 20) that he will retire as general secretary next year.

In a church news release, Granberg-Michaelson said his time with the RCA “has been rooted in a strong experience of God’s calling” but felt that “it seems timely to seek a new general secretary who will serve and lead the RCA into the future.”

“It has been a joy to serve the RCA and witness God’s power as we follow Christ in mission,” he said. “I will be forever grateful for God’s call on my life over these 17 years.”

In recent years, Granberg-Michaelson has been a key leader in ecumenical circles, helping to found the group Christian Churches Together in the USA, the nascent Global Christian Forum and also the new World Communion of Reformed Churches.

Granberg-Michaelson expects to serve until the fall of 2011, allowing the church’s General Synod Council to launch the search for a replacement.
