Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose from the dead on "the third day," in the words of the ancient Nicene Creed. But if Jesus died at 3 p.m. Friday and vacated his tomb by dawn Sunday morning -- about 40 hours later -- how does that make three days?

Simple. I had the same problem in middle years of parochial school. Neither the nuns nor the parish priests attempted to explain that math, just kept going through the three-days thing. Then it dawned on me, ok, along with all the ancient mythology from which even Christianity evolved, thanks Zeus and Thor and all those “people,” Oh yeah, and Neptune. It was kind of a symbolic way of talking. Jesus was in Joseph’s tomb on Friday, even thought not all of it, all of Saturday, and part of Sunday. So Jesus was in the tomb on at least parts of three different days. It didn’t mean he was in the tomb for three full days, you know, like 3 x 24. Religion is like that. Too bad the rigid Benedict and the mouthy, distorting Timothy Dolan of New York who tries to defy the good sense of history and our Constitution don’t realize that.
