Louisville, Kentucky—A new book from Presbyterian pastor Ben Daniel addresses the many negative stereotypes about Islam in an attempt to demystify the religion for North American Christians. In The Search for Truth about Islam: A Christian Pastor Separates Fact from Fiction (Westminster John Knox Press), Daniel provides a basic introduction to the Islamic religion for readers with little background knowledge—including its history, culture, and beliefs—drawing on his personal interviews with prominent Muslim figures in the United States and Jerusalem. Daniel also examines the misconceptions about Islamic teachings relating to violence and the treatment of women, pointing to examples from Christian scripture and history that might suggest to an outsider that Christianity is violent or misogynistic. Daniel concludes with hope for interfaith cooperation in the growing interconnectedness between Christianity and Islam.

Ben Daniel is Pastor of Foothill Presbyterian Church in San José, California. His previous book, Neighbor: Christian Encounters with “Illegal” Immigration, was named the Religion Book of the Year by ForeWord Reviews.
