Art show hopes to start conversations on faith, family

OMAHA, NE – With the goal of opening up the conversations about faith, the Sancta Familia Medical Apostolate clinic offers an evening of Christian-inspired artwork at its clinic. Sponsored by Gloria Deo Catholic bookstore, the show will be presented from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 7 at the clinic.

The show will feature a dozen artists, including John Meng-Frecker, Elizabeth Webster and Laura Duggan, and includes a variety of art media, such as icons, oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings.

Admission to the one-night-only show is donation-based. Proceeds from the evening will  benefit local Catholic artists and to the Sancta Familia Medical clinic, which provides Christ-centered primary health care for the whole family.

The event includes art giveaways, food donated by Sgt. Peffer’s Italian Café, door prizes, a silent auction and free caricatures.

One of the show’s highlighted paintings is The Annunciation by Meng-Frecker, where the angel Gabriel announces to Mary she is full of grace and highly favored by God. In this piece, he tells her she will conceive and give birth to a son, Jesus. Light radiates from the angel and Mary both at the moment of the Incarnation of Jesus, Son of the Most High.

Four years ago, Meng-Frecker took on landscape painting, eventually switching from oil to watercolor, while deepening his interest in his faith at the same time. After attending a myriad of Bible studies, he produced The Annunciation.

“I felt grace in that painting,” said Meng-Frecker, which inspired him to continue. He now includes scripture studies with each painting in the series, titled Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

Halfway done with the series, the artist sells the works in progress in booklet format. Meng-Frecker enjoys “talking to people about their faith and how they are drawn deeper with scripture and sacred art together.”

Drawing inspiration from other successful shows, such as “Sacred Art Show and Sale: Catholic Art By Catholic Artists” this past spring in Lincoln, Meng-Frecker expects to draw a “more faithful group of viewers that generally leads to conversations of faith and family,” which can progress to the exploration of how sacred art touches both.
