After learning of the pope’s decision to add the name of St. Joseph to the Eucharistic prayers  I emailed my old colleague, Sr. Patricia Byrne of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden, for her reaction. Here’s what she emailed back.

I hadn’t heard about this. It makes sense, though, since it’s already in the Roman canon. When John XXIII added “Joseph” to the canon, it was the first change in 400 years. Our vow formula includes something that characterizes Joseph for us. After poverty, chastity, and obedience, we say, “and I profess, with your grace my God, to practice the most profound humility in all things and the most cordial charity toward my neighbor, whom I desire to serve . . .”  Not that all of us live up to that, but it’s the hallmark.

Sounds like Pope Francis’ hallmark too.
