    The problem is what you define as progressive is seen as incredibly regressive to most americans (and most catholics). Commonweal has been towing the bishops line when it comes to contraception and gay marriage. When it comes to gay rights, how can anyone take them seriously when they still argue with a straight face that procreation is purpose of marriage and that catholic schools should fire openly gay teachers? America tries to skirt the issue and only the NCR has any real liberal bona fides.

    Procreation is a purpose within the institution of marriage and if someone does not understand or accept the Christian theology of sexuality and marriage then they don’t have any business teaching at an institution that does.
