2013 was a bloody, difficult, unraveling year for many Muslims around the world. May 2014 be a year that sees the discomforted comforted, the orphans cared for, the hungry fed, the naked clothed, the homeless provided with shelter. May there be a widening of the circle of compassion, may there be a real peace rooted in justice, and above all else, may all of us be participants in making it so.

    Professor Safi,

Happy New Year! My name is Verda Agan. I am a first-year student at UNC Chapel Hill, and I very much enjoy reading your blog posts. I am currently enrolled in your RELI 181 course, and I look forward to meeting you personally. I read in your bibliography that you tour students in Turkey every summer. I am Turkish, as are my parents, and we go to Istanbul almost every summer (not this past summer, though, due to the uprisings). I think it is great what you do! (: You must know Professor Canguzel I am sure. I have known her since I was a little girl. She connected me closer to traditional Turkish music and its classics.

I look forward to meeting you!

    Best,
    Verda Agan
