The conservative backlash against soccer has increased during the World Cup. Some fault the sport for not employing our God-given opposable thumbs. That's dumb.

Aren’t Africa and South American the new epicenters of Christianity? They seem to be on team soccer (football) pretty strongly.

I believe that we will win!! USA! USA! I dream to have a hair do live Olivier someday.

I am a huge soccer fan (have stickers for a German team and an English team on my car, fav player plays in Italy); and I found your post interesting. I have also been reading Ann C for years. She is completely off base this time; and I take offense. But I also take offense at your calling her names. Despite her sports opinion, I have found that most of her columns are insightful and, although brash, usually strike at the uncomfortable heart of the issue.

Marc Theissen is an uncritical, party apologist who needs to be reminded of the principles of human rights which his party was ostensibly founded upon. Just look at his writings on torture, which belie his departure from such. Shun him and maybe he’ll go away.

Most of the time, Americans who whine about football do it because the US has no chance of winning. Yanks are so jingoistic and self-absorbed that they can’t watch or appreciate anything where they aren’t winning.

    But Coulter’s gum flapping isn’t anti-football. It’s thinly veiled anti-immigrant racism.

  • Danny

Racism? 14 (almost half) of the world cup entrants come from predominantly caucasian countries. Isn’t that her own race? As for immigrants, I have read several of her pieces on immigration. I have never seen anything against immigrants; only against illegal immigration. On a separate note, why the name calling again?

  • Larry

Yes and Yes. The racism and anti-immigrant attitude is not that thinly veiled

My beef with football are the same ones brought up by the Simpsons many years ago:
    1. The field is just too big
    2. Not enough scoring
    3. Ties
    4. Most Americans are not really good at it.
[you are absolutely correct on that point 🙂 ]

That being said, US women’s soccer is awesome.
