(RNS) Advocates for people with mental illness say they hope Robin Williams' death will motivate more people to get help for depression and spur the nation to treat suicide as a public health crisis.

My family are deeply sadden over the death of Robin Williams by his own hand. A man who has brought so much joy to others battled a depression to the point of despair and eventually to his death. Dead Poets Society and so many other of his films are engraved in our minds and hearts.

We’ve recognized the need for such public health as suggested here, but we only sing lamentations about it when someone famous is a victim. Consider the cost of medical care for such illness. Consider how the Republican Party has even distorted the name of the Affordable Care Act into “Obamacare,” not to honor our president for leading this nation to the meager care that act provides, but to evangelizing of their ugly racial prejudice even against health care for everyone because they are buried in their racial hatred for our half-black president. They are so blinded by that racial hatred they don’t even realize it extends halfway to themselves because Obama is also half-white.

This is the only notice I’ve seen yet that mentioned Robin Williams was Bi Polar. That is a very important aspect of his problems.I had a Bi Polar son, and know it’s common for them to stop taking their medicine when they feel fine, then try to self medicate with alcohol and cocaine. My son was a musician, and said rhe medication affected his ability to perform, so he self medicated with alcohol and cocaine..he died from health problems. I hope we pay more attention to this medical problem that adds so much cost to medical, judicial, and police budgets.

Gilhcan: if screaming racism when none exists as an excuse for a failed policy or personal incompetence, is determined to be a mental illness, you need to be locked up.

Nothing against Robin Williams but did n’t he have access to mental health? He went to rehab at least twice.
