Religious Response to Ferguson – As protests continue in Ferguson, Missouri in the wake of the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager, many in the religious community are calling for a new national conversation about moral issues highlighted in the situation, issues including racial inequality, social justice and the use of police force.  Host Bob Abernethy and Managing Editor Kim Lawton discuss the religious response with Alton Pollard III, Dean of Howard University Divinity School and Russell Moore, President of the Ethics & Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The Orphan Girls of China — When Jenny and Richard Bowen of Berkeley, California learned about the millions of neglected, orphaned children in China, most of them girls, they went to work.  As Fred de Sam Lazaro reports, they adopted two orphan Chinese girls, and Jenny founded and now heads the “Half the Sky” Foundation, named from the Chinese proverb that says women hold up half the sky.  It has trained 12,000 teachers and nannies in 27 Chinese provinces to take better care of the orphans – care that now includes not just warehousing but love.

Depicting Jesus – “Black Jesus,” a new series on the Cartoon Network has generated protests from conservative Christians.  Visually depicting Jesus, whether in sacred art or pop culture, has always been a controversial prospect.  Kim Lawton talks with Edward Blum, co-author of the book The Color of Christ, about how portrayals of Jesus can impact spiritual perceptions.
