If the Bible is to be taken as official in Tennessee, have the authors of this bill worked out which Bible is to be taken?

If it’s the Jewish Bible that would mean dropping the New Testament’s 27 books.

If it’s the Protestant Bible that would mean dropping the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonicals, something that might not please the Catholics and the Orthodox.

If it’s the Catholic Bible, there are a few bits and pieces that the Orthodox accept as canonical. Also, that is sure to displease the Protestants, who don’t accept the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonicals.

If it’s an Orthodox Bible, that would include all the bits that the others accept, but also include pieces that all the others not accept as part of the canon.

Having now failed to agree on what is and what is not the Bible, perhaps we had better drop the whole idea, as it would almost certainly be unconstitutional.

    Good one!

  • Mike Hickcox

A Christian who actually believes in the Golden Rule (see Matthew 7:12 in a version that includes the Gospels) could not support a proposal to make any version of the Bible the official state book.

  • If Tennessee were to adopt the Bible as its most important book, would they have to throw out their laws against rape? Rape is God’s way of punishing….the husbands:

God commands Raping of wives in daylight to punish the men
“Thus says the Lord: ‘I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives [plural] while you live to see it, and will give them to your neighbor. He shall HAVE SEX WITH YOUR WIVES in broad daylight. You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel, and with the sun looking down.’ ” (2 Samuel 12:11)

Rape neighbors wives in broad daylight. God’s brilliant plan.

Glad Tennessee’s idiots are outnumbered by the sane ones who reject this primitive garbage.

  • Time for a refreshing Bible Lesson:

“Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse.” (1 Peter 2:18)

Thanks, Tennessee for reminding us why many of us left JESUS years ago.

    Ditto previous reply…

Idiots are people wasting time in a legislature on illegal sectarian bullcrap and putting off efforts to set up a healthcare exchange (at no cost to the state).

I guess nonsense coerced affirmations of faith imposed on the public is of greater importance than the health and welfare of citizens of the state.

  • Karen

Please. This is Tennessee. I grew up here and I can tell you: the King James Version. Period.

  • Elizabeth

Well put Michael!!! Thank you!! People generally do not have a cloe that there is More than one version of the Bible! Each one depends upon who wrote what to suit ones needs for Power, Greed, Wives, Culture, etc.. And I agree, not a good idea. They tried to do that here in Pennsylvania and it didn’t make through! Thank the Goddess!

  • PeterVN

Your previous reply was also without merit.

  • PeterVN

Who the f are you? Why should we take your word that a particular version of a book of religious quackery is the correct one?

  • Eric

James Carr, repeating statements does not make them true. I know this is a favorite tactic of conservative Christians who attended the I’m Rubber, You’re Glue School of Rhetoric and Debate, but it doesn’t prove anything. It just makes you sound like a broken record. Or as sounding brass and tinkling cymbals, if you prefer.

  • Eric

I believe she was reporting, not advocating.

Please explain the rubber and glue.

I believe you, but am just a little surprised that some of the Evangelicals in Tennessee do not use the NIV.

  • Re: “Idiots are people wasting time in a legislature on illegal sectarian bullcrap and putting off efforts to set up a healthcare exchange (at no cost to the state).”

Of course! Makes perfect sense. They shouldn’t do anything to help make the ACA work. Their faith forbids it, because healthcare reform is “the spirit of Herod”: http://religiondispatches.org/religious-right-god-should-kill-health-care-reform-to-save-america-from-herod/

By trying to get the Bible made “the state book,” and by refusing to implement an exchange which they don’t even need to fund, they’re just doing Jesus’ bidding. Supposedly.

dmj, Don’t be so ignorant. You’ve got search tools.

The insulting speech bounds from the speaker off of an elastic medium in a 180 degree vector from the intended target and stays with the speaker as if it had adhesive qualities. 🙂

  • Genesis

Atheist Max-God is not talking about rape. He is talking about consensual sex-see if you read the whole chapter you will see what is going on. At this point in the Bible, King David-who was beloved by God-has committed a great sin. David has taken a wife to be his, that was already married (committed adultery) and this woman has now become pregnant. To hide (for thou didst it secretly-verse 12) he sent this woman’s husband to the front of the battle lines so that he would be killed in war and he could then take the newly widow as his own wife and say he impregnated her after their marriage. David also has a wife at this point (Mikal-King Saul’s daughter promised to him for defeating Goliath). So in this verse the prophet Nathan is letting David know for his sin he will be punished and his wives will be allowed to lay with another man and it will be made known public to all of Israel as to embarrass David for sleeping with his neighbor’s wife and trying to hide it.

  • @Genesis:

“God is not talking about rape…”

    The hell he isn’t.
God says: “I will command your neighbors to rape your wives in daylight” (2 Samuel 12:11)
    God recommends rape OFTEN!

“When you go out to war…and the LORD delivers slaves into your hand… if you see a pretty woman among the enslaved….you may take her home….you may take her sexually for yourself.” (Deuteronomy 21:10-14)

“Jesus answered them, ‘I and My Father are one.’ ” (John 10:30-33)

    The world will improve somewhat
when we abandon these bronze age nightmares.
