Evangelicals and LGBT Acceptance – In the wake of the US Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage across the country, evangelical Christians remain among the staunchest opponents of the practice. But Kim Lawton looks at how growing acceptance of LGBT issues in American society is posing new challenges for the evangelical community. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks – Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, eminent scholar and author, retired after serving 22 years as the Chief Rabbi for the UK. He is teaching in the U.S. this year and leading a global religious response to religious violence. In an interview with anchor Bob Abernethy, Sacks says, “Religion causes violence whenever we confuse piety and power.” He believes that when groups seek power in the name of piety they do great harm. They injure God’s world. (Originally broadcast February 13, 2015) http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/2015/02/13/february-15-2015-rabbi-jonathan-sacks/25218/

Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica – August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption, when Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox and some other Christians commemorate the belief that the Virgin Mary was bodily taken into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The most popular Catholic pilgrimage destination in the world is the Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico, which honors Mary’s appearance to a native American peasant in the 1500s. Fred de Sam Lazaro visits the shrine and reports on the devotion of the pilgrims who visit there.
