One out of every four abortions in the U.S. is performed in California. And unlike most states, abortions are not likely to go down here.
In 2014, when most state health payments were cut by 10 percent, the funding for abortions in California was increased 40 percent. In 2014 all clinic regulations were removed for California abortion facilities. And in 2014, the state’s law was changed to allow abortions by nurses, midwives, and physician’s assistants.
One bright hope looms large for the lives of the unborn and young teenage girls – parental notification.
Parental notification, whereby one parent of an under-18-year-old girl would be notified before an abortion is performed on her, came within two percent of victory at the ballot in 2008. The current parental notification measure was qualified to collect signatures for the November 2016 ballot on September 18.
Since 2008, three major changes have taken place:
- Demographics. Hispanics, who poll 81 percent in favor of parental notification, have grown from 18 percent in 2008 of actual voters to 25-25 percent in 2016. Asians, who poll 70 percent in favor of parental notifiation, have grown from 5 percent of actual voters in 2008 to 9-10 percent in 2016.
- Resources. Political experts point out that in 2008 parental notification advocates were outspent 15 to 1 by pro-abortion forces and ran no major media campaign. Since 2008, those in favor of a parent’s right to know have been marshalling resources to make sure the pro-family point of view is heard.
- Political climate. Partly because of the fetal parts videos released starting July, 2015, donors and likely activists have been galvanized. Audiences across the country have been exposed to the reality of unrestricted abortion – as recently as the September 16 presidential debate.
585,407 valid signatures are required to put parental notification on the November, 2016 California ballot. Automated calls will start going out this Saturday, September 25, following by mass mailing of petitions. Petitions will be mailed to every church in California to get churchgoers collecting signatures from family, friends, and neighbors.
