Wheaton College Political science professor Larycia Hawkins was suspended from her post at the evangelical college last week after saying on Facebook that Christians and Muslims “worship the same God.”  The college administration has asked her to explain how her views accord with the college’s statement of faith. In this video from the PBS show “Chicago Tonight, Hawkins explains her views and why, during Advent, she is wearing a Muslim headscarf, although she is a Christian herself.

This is sad. She states that Timothy George affirms her position. He does not. Christians believe in the Trinity. Muslims see that as blasphemy. Christians believe in Jesus Christ as fully human and fully divine. Muslims see Jesus only as a prophet. I regret both her ignorance, and the way she almost seems arrogant about it. Sad, but in our culture, many such distinctions will fall on deaf ears.

“Sad, but in our culture, many such distinctions will fall on deaf ears.”

Please spare us your nonsense. No one in this situation is unaware of these differences. Literally no one. N.o.t. o.n.e. person. You’re just upset that your oversimplified view of people who don’t look, act, talk, and think like you down to the letter isn’t the law of the land in “our culture.”

  • People need to pay attention to their holy books.
It is very lazy to say Allah and Yahweh and Jesus are the same God.

Though these legends are all man made, they share nothing else in common. They each condemn followers (real people) to be slaughtered for disbelief – NOT A SMALL PROBLEM!

    “Slay Them” (Surah) Q’uran
“Execute them in front of me” – Jesus (Luke 19:27)
    “Kill unbelievers” – Yahweh (Torah)

    Who needs this?

You literally have no idea what you are talking about. Anyone can take words out of context and make them mean whatever they want. You have no theological background to give context and meaning to what you said, all you have is ignorance, hate to promote your atheist views.

Luke 19:27 does not stand alone. It is part of a parable that starts at verse 11. One has to read the whole parable (Lk. 19:11-28) to understand the message Jesus wants to transmit in the final verse (vs. 27).

    1) The parable uses the example of two earthly classes- nobleman and servants. It shows the wealth and authority of the nobleman over the servants.
That relationship is to be compared to the relationship between God/Jesus and men.

    2) The parable includes the earthly situation of the nobleman entrusting his servant with earthly wealth.
We are meant to see this as a worldly example of what takes place spiritually when God bestows graces and talent on each of us.

    3) The parable concludes with the nobleman returning to judge the servant according to how he used the earthly wealth given to him. The ruler condemns him to earthly death for not even attempting to use it, to increase it; especially since he knew what his nobleman was like and would desire.
    Jesus will return…

The comment is far from nonsense. It’s level-headed and fact-based. If you have a problem with truth, take it up with the Source, not the messenger.

  • all you have is ignorance, hate…

Excuse me, but the hate and ignorance is not coming from me (a former Christian).
It took me decades to discover how much hate and bigotry comes directly from JESUS:

“The master shall cut him to pieces” – Jesus (Luke 12)
“Better he be drowned with a millstone” – Jesus (Matt 18:6)
“And why do you break the command of God
for the sake of your tradition?- ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ ” – Jesus (Matthew 15:3)
“I have come to bring fire…such constraints! I am impatient to bring not peace but disorder!” – Jesus (Luke 12:49-51)
“remove your blessing of peace.” – JESUS (Matt 10:13)
“Hate your parents…hate your life” – Jesus (Luke 14:26)
“..gather those who do not abide in me…they shall be burned in the fire.” – JESUS (John 15:6)
“I shall kill her children with death.” – JESUS (Rev 2:23)

    None of this is good.

  • @Iocococo,

Your analysis of the Parable of the Minas (the Parousia parable) is flawed.

You avoided the two parts which are not open to interpretation:
    1. Jesus is the nobleman of the story (as he is plagiarizing Odysseus) and he describes what he will do when he returns at the Parousia or Second Coming.
    2. He says he will instruct the good servants to DO THE SORTING by their own judgement and they shall be rewarded with the duty of conducting the executions:

The lesson is addressed to the obedient servants:
“Bring to me those enemies of mine who would not have me for their King and execute them in front of me.” – JESUS (Luke 19:27)

Perhaps the most dangerous, depraved words of any religious text in history.

putting. aside Ms Hawkins. This Whole discussion needs a strong. dose of HOLY. SPIRIT TEACHING! Luke 11:13;ST John 14:26; Isaiah 55:8-9; Prov.9:10. HOLY SPIRIT TAUGHT is GOD/JESUS TAUGHT. AMEN.

It’s hardly fair to include 2 words of an entire verse with an entire context behind it. If you’re not going to put the entire thing down, don’t quote it. It’s highly misleading. It’s like going to your wife and saying “I cheated” when really you meant to say “I cheated on my diet plan and ate the last piece of cake.” Like c’mon, you didn’t even list the surah name. Where is the decency? It’s Surah Tawbah btw, verse 5. “”Then, when the sacred months have passed, SLAY the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful”

This ayat refers to the war that took place due to the pagan Arabs violating their peace treaties by waging war against the Muslims. Last time I checked, when in war… bloodshed is the consequence.

WRONG! Not all Chrisitans believe the trinity view. There are those non-trinitarians that are also called Unitarians, not to get confused with the universal Unitarians. however both groups accept Romans 10:9-10 which muslims donot accept Jesus as their savior or son of God

  • ishaq

Christian believe god had sex and a child what u mean by Muslims only believe as prophet read the book and see for ur self

  • Hannah,

    “I cheated….on a diet”

This is not a game. Real people are being killed yet you play a word game.
You did not improve any of the meaning when you put your quote in Context!
Religious people claim Atheism is relative morality – yet what is more morally relative than your excuse for criminal bigotries and incitements to murder?

“I came only for the Jews” – Jesus
“Do not make friends with Jews or Christians” – Allah
“Stone to death those who believe other religions” – Yahweh

The world doesn’t need this stuff. It should all be abandoned.
