(RNS) This is the third in a series of advice columns where I answer letters I never received. Check out the first two editions on whether nonwhites have contributed to civilization and whether we should be scared of atheists.
Dear The Literalist,
Donald Trump? What? Is this the end of our democracy and/or civilization? I really believed everything was getting better. Just look at the all female Ghostbusters and everybody loves Ellen. We elected a black president, for heaven’s sake! What the hell is happening to all our beautiful progress? I’ve decided to return to my liberal Protestant church. Now is the time we need to start praying again. I’m just a little unsure of how to pray. It’s been awhile. I stopped in the 1980s when Christianity became synonymous with fundamentalist crackpots. How do I get back in with God, because we need Her!

Dear God-fearing Again,
God is not a tool for political opposition to amplify your moral indignation. Sorry. While God is always pleased when anyone is awakened to evil in the world, it shouldn’t have taken you this long and two master’s degrees. You probably even work for a university. Donald Trump did not invent evil. Barack Obama is not Jesus. Hillary Clinton is not the Blessed Mother. The soon-to-be Overlord of Evil/Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross just bought a D.C. mansion across the street from Obama’s ultra-wealthy donor-turned Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker. Glad you found God and all, but this is not the End Times any more than Obama using drones to kill American citizens.
