Dallas-Fort Worth—In the late autumn of 2003, well-known bishop, pastor, author, and evangelist Dag Heward-Mills pitched a tent in a field in Ghana so that he might present the life-saving and miracle-working message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to anyone who would listen. With 600 chairs set up, more than 2000 people gathered under the protection of that tent to hear what he had to say. His mission was a straightforward one: He felt led to bring the Gospel message to one thousand places where Christ had not yet been preached.

In the months that followed, more tents were pitched, this time in small towns and rural villages located in Ghana. Each time, crowds gathered to hear the message of God’s love and as they listened, literally thousands, including drug addicts, prostitutes and criminals, surrendered their lives to Christ.

Those first tent-meetings were the beginning orchestrations of what Heward-Mills would later name the Healing Jesus Campaign. Fueled by his relentless passion and strengthened by God’s grace, that initial effort has grown substantially in the past decade. So far, a total of 70 campaigns have been held in towns and villages in eleven different emerging and third-world countries, including Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone. During these campaigns events, each taking place over a three to five day period, hundreds of thousands of people will gather in each location to listen to the gospel message, many of whom will experience visible, authentic healing from crippling diseases, blindness, infirmities and more.

“Jesus always touches people everywhere we go, “Heward-Mills attests. “That is what the Healing Jesus Campaign is all about. It is about Jesus and healing and about how God’s power is very, very real today.

“As we travel through some of the most remote places we see the hunger and need for God,” he adds. “People really need the Lord. Yet still, thousands live and die without ever hearing the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. That is why we must go even farther and preach the gospel.”

With his mission to reach out to souls in a thousand remote locations unfamiliar with Christ, Heward-Mills and his campaign team plan to hold 28 more Healing Jesus Campaigns in Liberia. Crossing over 35 international borders in the process and traveling 14000 kilometers – almost 9,000 miles, they will strive to accomplish the equivalent of five years hard work within a few short months.

Committed to spreading the love and compassion of Christ, as each event is taking place a special team of medical professionals volunteers their time and expertise to provide free medical care to the poor and under-served in these remote areas. Setting up clinics under the tents during the day, treatment teams diagnose and treat patients while pharmaceutical teams dispense much needed medicines, all at no cost to the patients. Heward-Mills, who is, himself, a medical doctor, believes that in offering this service, not only do the poor and underserved receive much needed care, but a door is opened for sharing the message of Jesus Christ. On average, over 2700 patients are treated during each campaign.

Such a mammoth undertaking is certainly nothing new for the Healing Jesus Campaign team. Since 2004, similar campaigns have led over 8 million people to surrender their lives to Christ, both in Africa and other emerging nations across the globe. With God’s faithful grace and provision, the team hopes to reach out even further in this single season, bringing more love, medical care and miracle healings to remote communities than ever before.
