(Los Angeles, CA) #GivingTuesday will earn formal recognition from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, organizers have announced, and Tuesday’s Faith+GivingTuesday+SocialGood summit will feature keynote remarks by Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin.

At the first-of-its-kind summit, philanthropic, nonprofit, and religious leaders and experts will explore how nonprofits can overcome communications gaps among religious and secular stakeholders, how to advance the effectiveness of religiously motivated giving, and how to ensure that faith-based nonprofits and social innovators have access to a level playing field when it comes to funding and policymaking.

The event, designed and led by Jumpstart Labs in collaboration with the Goldhirsh Foundation and Hershey Cause Communications, for the first time combines two United Nations Foundation/92Y initiatives, #GivingTuesday and the +SocialGood series.

“#GivingTuesday helps open a dialogue among partners all over the globe, large and small, to talk about how different communities, including faith-based organizations, collaborate with the nonprofit and philanthropy and international development sector,” said Aaron Sherinian, the United Nations Foundation’s Vice President of Communications and Public Relations. “Leveraging the power of the +SocialGood community is an important way to include voices from around the world into the conversation around philanthropy highlight some of the best stories of innovative positive impact.”

At the regular Tuesday, December 3, meeting of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will make a special Board presentation to recognize and support the inaugural global #GivingTuesday observance and celebration. Jumpstart Labs CEO Shawn Landres will address the Board, along with Goldhirsh Foundation President Tara Roth and Nadia Roumani, Executive Director of the Muslim Giving Project.  Certificates of recognition from County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and from L.A. City Controller Galperin will be presented at the afternoon summit.

“Every day I am inspired by young people across the country and around the world who are giving back and making a difference,” said Lynn Schusterman, Chair of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Philanthropic Network, which is cosponsoring the summit along with another #GivingTuesday event in New York City. “Faith+GivingTuesday+SocialGood is a great opportunity to understand how faith and values inform their efforts to build stronger communities and a better world.”

Faith+GivingTuesday+SocialGood draws on lessons from Jumpstart’s newly published Connected to Give: Faith Communities, a ground-breaking new report on religion and giving in America. The continuing Connected to Give series has earned international coverage, including articles in TIME, The Wall Street Journal, and The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
