For over 50 years, Religion Communication Congresses have provided an opportunity for multifaith religion communicators to come together and discuss relevant changes and practices with a diverse faith-based community. The approaching Religion Communication Congress 2020: Communicating Faith in the Public Square (RCCongress 2020) comes at a critical time in communication history when new technologies are quickly outpacing existing laws and practices that regulate media production and other forms of public communications.

Dr. Clifford G. Christians, professor emeritus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is one of the world’s leading scholars on ethics in media. He has explored, over the course of his career, the nature and role of ethics and ethical decision-making in media and human dialogue, and will be a featured speaker at RCCongress 2020. His expansive knowledge and indisputable expertise will present participants with a crucial voice in the discussions taking place as we focus on “Communicating Faith in the Public Square.”

His presentation “Fake News, Rights and Obligations in a Digital World” will explore the origins of disinformation, particularly the rise of fake news in digital media. RCCongress 2020 participants can expect to participate in an engaging discussion about the ways in which today’s digital platforms are being manipulated, by whom and for what purposes. Dr. Christian’s ethical reflections and responses will speak to both the advantages and limitations that accompany every new technological innovation.

Dr. Christians has published countless works and articles. In a recent article published in the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) Media Development journal titled “New digital technology and global communication ethics” he calls for a renewed commitment to the ethical principles of truth telling, human dignity, and nonviolence. His latest book, “Media Ethics and Global Justice in the Digital Age” was published in May of 2019 and explores the worldwide phenomenon of today’s digital revolution.
