DENVER — As churches around the country resume in-person services, ministry leaders are finding mixed results when it comes to attendance and people’s expectations upon returning. A new study sheds light on how people are feeling about coming back to church and what may be holding some people back.

In early May 2020, American Church Group of Colorado teamed up with Springtide Research Institute based in Minnesota, and The Parable Group based in California to co-sponsor a national study that surveyed churchgoers to help determine what effect COVID-19 concerns may have on future church attendance.

The study identified three distinct groups of people with different perspectives on their willingness or reluctance to return to in-person services.

Based on the study’s findings, 25 percent of respondents say that they do not feel strongly about social distancing practices, while 59 percent express concerns over having people in their life that are within a sensitive population.

According to Craig Cable, the Director of Ministry Safety and Strategic Partnerships for American Church Group of Colorado, “We wanted to go beyond just providing the data from the study, our goal was to offer practical recommendations for ministry leaders to consider that could help them better serve their congregations during these uncertain times.

The study also provides insights into people’s receptivity to change, expectations related to communications, and people’s spiritual growth over the last several months.
