Dolls representing the 41 women’s religious communities in the Cleveland diocese are exhibited in several of the city’s downtown stores in 1964. The exhibit of the figures, dressed authentically by the congregations they represent, was sponsored by the Theresians, a group of women dedicated to promoting vocations to the sisterhoods. Shown placing the dolls in a bank window are Mrs. Edward J. Conrad, vocations director of the Theresians, and her granddaughter, Donna Steiger. The dolls ultimately would be sent to various Catholic high schools in the diocese. Religion News Service Photo via Presbyterian Historical Society
Four Protestant clergymen from Houston, Texas, arrive at the U.S. Embassy in Teheran on Jan. 13, 1980, on a privately organized journey to free the U.S. hostages being held by Iranian militants. From left: the Revs. Gene Moore, Donald Everett, J.D. Pailey and Robert Mills. Characterizing their mission as being "strictly spiritual," the ministers said they would seek to hold a worship service for the hostages, commemorating the birthday of the late Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 15. Mills declared, "We are going to make a very serious spiritual plea to them to release the American hostages to the American people through the black clergymen in honor of Dr. King."
