Former Prime Minister Abel T. Muzorewa, who is a United Methodist bishop, is shown above in an earlier photo. Muzorewa was arrested by government officials at his home in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Oct. 31, 1983, and charged with maintaining subversive links with South Africa. But some observers believe that his arrest might be more accurately related to remarks the prelate made when he recently returned from Israel and repeated his stand that Zimbabwe should have closer economic ties with Israel — a position scorned by the administration of Prime Minister Robert Mugabe who takes exception to Israel's military cooperation with South Africa and its policies toward the Palestinians.
