The New York Times reported on Sunday that President Obama has an “intimate inner circle” of five key religious leaders who he turns to for prayer and discussions about religion and politics.
“While he may not put ‘Honk if You Love Jesus’ bumper stickers on the back of his car, he is the kind of guy who practices what he preaches,” said one of the five, the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, senior pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston. “He has a desire to keep in touch with folk outside the Beltway, and to stay in touch with God. He seems to see those as necessary conditions for maintaining his internal compass.”
The other four are:
— The Rev. Otis Moss Jr., a veteran of the civil rights movement
— Bishop T. D. Jakes, Dallas megachurch pastor
— The Rev. Jim Wallis, president of Washington-based Sojourners
— The Rev. Joel Hunter, pastor of Florida megachurch.
