NEW YORK (RNS) A funeral Mass for the Rev. Daniel Berrigan was held on Friday (May 6) at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York City.

A Jesuit priest and herald of the Catholic social justice movement, Berrigan — along with his late brother, Philip, also a priest — became synonymous with anti-war activism in the Vietnam era.

Berrigan had been living at the Jesuit infirmary at Fordham University in the Bronx when he died on April 30. He was 94.

RNS Publisher Heidi Thompson attended his funeral and took these photos.
