Duterte vows to resign if anybody can prove God exists

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine president, who recently sparked outrage for calling God stupid, has courted new controversy in his largely Roman Catholic country by saying he will resign if anybody can prove that God exists.

President Rodrigo Duterte, who has had a thorny relationship with the church, questioned anew in a speech late Friday (July 6) some of the basic tenets of the Catholic faith, including the concept of original sin, which he said taints even innocent infants and can only be removed through baptism in a church for a fee.

“Where is the logic of God there?” Duterte asked in a speech at the opening of a science and technology event in southern Davao city.

The 73-year-old leader said that if there’s “one single witness” who can prove, perhaps with a picture or a selfie, that a human was “able to talk and to see God,” he will immediately resign.

Duterte, however, suggested that there must be a God or a supreme being that prevents billions of stars and celestial bodies from colliding in a frequency that could have long threatened the human race.

Last week, he was slammed, including by some of his political allies, for calling God “stupid” in another speech, with one Catholic bishop calling him a “psychopath.”

Duterte lamented in that speech that Adam and Eve’s sin in Christian theology resulted in all the faithful falling from divine grace.

“Who is this stupid God? This son of a bitch is then really stupid,” he said last week. “You were not involved but now you’re stained with an original sin. … What kind of a religion is that? That’s what I can’t accept, very stupid proposition.”

Opposition Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV shot back at Duterte by describing him as “one evil man” and his remarks as “very much consistent with the deceitfulness, heartlessness and ruthlessness of his policies.”

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque has defended the president’s remarks, saying Duterte has the right to express his opinion on religion, and cited the president’s previous disclosure that he was once sexually abused by a priest.

Duterte on Friday recalled that experience, when he said he and other students were fondled by a foreign Jesuit priest, who has since died.

Amid the criticisms, officials have arranged a meeting between Duterte and the head of the largest association of Catholic bishops on Monday. Filipino bishops opened an annual conference in Manila on Saturday and were expected to address Duterte’s tirades when they conclude their meeting on Monday.

Some Catholic bishops have been critical of Duterte’s brutal crackdown against illegal drugs, which have left thousands of suspects dead in reported clashes with the police, along with his vulgar and expletive-laden speeches. He once called Pope Francis a “son of a bitch” for sparking a monstrous traffic during a 2015 visit in Manila that trapped Duterte for hours.

  • Where are you William Lane Craig?

Here is your chance to send a non-believer packing !!

  • This calls to mind an essay my son once wrote arguing that democracy was not the best governance option. But he won the popular voted and Trump has a ‘great relationship’ with him. But I will say the Catholic church has protested his actions and opened up sanctuary churches for those ‘drug dealers’. – unlike the 4 Ttump supporters at the Great Falls Montana rally.

  • It’s okay if Duterte resigns, but frankly we’re all busy people around here. So he needs to spice up his challenge if he wants Americans to jump on it.

Let’s see now. He always looks like he got some underhanded money to burn. So $200,000 for first place (tax-free) should do nicely, followed by 100K for second place, 50K for third, and three 20K “honorable mentions.”

That kind of challenge would go world-wide viral in one minute. I would certainly give it a shot!!

  • If I believed he would do it I would do my best as a Christian to convince him God doesn’t exist.

Alas I have no faith in him.

  • Wait, who? The same guy who called Obama names like ***** and **** or was it *****? What does that even translate to back in Tagalog, without getting lost in translation?

No matter. What counts is what these headlines are trying to tell fooled Westerners like you & me. Just listen to this!

    – “Filipinos Are Better Off Under Duterte”, Forbes, February 3, 2018.

    – “Survey shows Filipinos more satisfied with Duterte government than any other”, Reuters, January 18, 2018.

    – “Philippines’ Duterte continues to see high trust, approval rating: poll”, Xinhua, January 18, 2018.

  • So long as “Filipinos Are Better Off Under Duterte”; and “Philippines’ Duterte continues to see high trust”; and “Filipinos more satisfied with Duterte government than any other” – what do you care? Americans don’t care about Filipinos; not really. Neither do atheists like you, especially.

  • He need to know that God is not necessary to keep stars in place. This is not one of the problems that really do threaten us. No help from God there either.

  • Is that a reverse Descartes? “He doesn’t think, therefore God isn’t”…?

  • Categorising atheists as uncaring may make it easier for you to dismiss your fear that we are the rational members of society.

Categorising people who make ignorant comments, make assumptions about people they’ve never met, tell others (including non americans) what they think, and unable see a tongue when it’s poking through the cheek as being redneck, home-schooled, inbred, fear-ridden, mental incompetents might make it easier to understand your comment ; doesn’t mean I’d be right though, does it – does it?

  • Trump likes Duterte because he’s tough. If he gets his way Americans will stand when he speaks like North Koreans do for their leader. When this becomes a police state Americans better say they are better off. They will also say “I don’t care do U”.

  • “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message [except for atheists like Bob Harrison].”
    – Melania Trump’s spokesman Stephanie Grisham, June 21, 2018 [with my mindreading editorial added for F/X].

  • “Inbred”? I never called you that. But that was you, though, last nite with “a tongue … poking through the cheek [just 5 inches above the] redneck”, right – right? Now answer the question.

  • Actually I wondered about her wearing a jacket that cost just 39 dollars and why that statement attracted her attention. Always thought it was more to do with her husband – or his affairs.

  • YOU SEE THE SUN MOON AND STARS DAY AND NIGHT AS WELL, THAT PROVES GOD EXIST AND CREATED THE THINGS HE SAID HE DID IN Genesis…Although i don’t agree with Murder no matter how much i hate drug dealers(kaiser permanente) well kaiser is just as much guilty as the dealers on the street and im just as guilty as your common addict and Duterte is a common murderer, I sure wouldnt want anything to do with you or kaiser permanente just like Duterte doesnt have any Grace when it comes to mistakes especially those of which kaiser permanente sells drugs. i think anyone can Murder but then id be no better than nebachadnezzar i mean Duterte

  • He seems to belive in God if he says: …lamented in that speech that Adam and Eve’s sin in Christian theology resulted in all the faithful falling from divine grace.

His words try to turn people away from God, but western society does it much more; by gender perversion, removing prayer and giving rights to those who do not have the ability to discern between what should and shouldn’t be done.

  • Touched a raw nerve did I? If you think the cap fits….wear it.

The only question is the one you already answered answered. Since, as you demonstrate in your final sentence, you are so clever that you already “know” my mind, and “know” it better than I, what likelihood is there that you’ll accept my word? Not going to give you the satisfaction of “knowing” that I’m a liar because the truth doesn’t equate with your preconceived silliness.

Now run along and waste someone else’s time for a few days – We’re off on holiday tomorrow.

  • It always amazes me, the willingness to declare authority over the lives of others when those who claim the authority obviously know nothing about it, and don’t care about the harm they inflict on other people because of their ignorance.

Statements like yours, attacking gay and trans people, is a great example of lacking the discernment between what should and shouldn’t be done.

  • But if he could get to stay until someone proves the existence of God he’d die in office wouldn’t he.

  • I would love to agree with you – governments make laws, but the laws of nature/God’s law can not be undone. Male and female can’t be undone, no matter how much governments change their laws.

At the end of time all will stand before God, let’s do it now already. Otherwise he will reject us, as he is being rejected by those who resist his laws. My advice for you – read the Bible and accept Jesus Christ as your saviour. Please don’t say I am talking about something I don’t know as the Bible has superior authority.

  • The humans that wrote that Bible were attempting to create authority for themselves. In a way they were successful.
Your concept of God and government only have as much authority as we give them or they take by force.

  • Good on her (pun) , and good for her, is what I say. And also: Twitter don’t lie, like this one:

“‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’ written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”
    – Donald J. Trump, @realDonaldTrump, Twitter, June 21, 2018.

  • Look to yourselves. You arrogantly claim to know rights which you interpret from your Bible. You don’t have the right to define or condemn gender perversion unless you are speaking of yourselves. That’s a private matter. You don’t have the right to require others to pray. Considering the state of your moral knowledge do you deserve rights?

  • “Off” to the Philippines to see our buddy Duterte? I knew it, I knew it, you’re in on it with him all along, giving him ideas about a “wannabe President-for-life”.

(Seriously, though, have a wonderful & safe holiday, you & yours & the dog with the bone!)

  • By merely looking at how the Bible sales stack up against all other bestsellers we can tell that there is a wholly different authority behind it. It is authored by God himself through many men over a period of thousands of years – through it supports itself. Not only that, but it’s prophecies are still being fulfilled, trust me all those not fulfilled yet will still come through. That’s why my best advice is to accept it as the supreme authority and add it to your daily life.

  • No, you wouldn’t love to agree with me at all. Why? Because you believe that your beliefs about your god, as retrieved from an ancient book you believe is god’s word, which you also believe you understand perfectly, has all of the answers that you need.

And that is ok, Except that you were also believe that it has all of the answers that I need, that it has “superior authority”, and that I should just do what you tell me.

I understand you, that you are wishing me well, in your fashion. One thing I wish you could understand, and I think I speak for a lot gay people here, is that it doesn’t feel at all to me that you are wishing me well, but quite the contrary, because to you, I am someone that needs to be fixed, whatever the cost may be to me so that you can assures yourselves that you were able to discern something wrong, and fix it.

Gender perversion? Nope, I am a man. No question in my mind. Deserving of Rights, the ones YOU feel I should have? What could it be more authoritarian then deciding which people get to have the same rights that you do, whether as heterosexuals, allegedly moral people, theoretically religious people, or human beings? If I were in the position to decide what rights you are entitled to, how might you feel about that?

This isn’t love, this is narcissism.

  • I can not question the fact that millions of people buy Bibles. I also understand that millions of people have believed it for several millennia. There are as many people over the millennia that haven’t bought it and haven’t believed it.

I prefer not to believe things because I want to. I need natural, not spiritual, evidence before I will consider something true. Otherwise I would need to pretend to know what i can’t know. That is called faith.

You are of course free to believe what you will. You do not have the right to try to require others to accept your moral values that are based on your faith. You also have no right to condemn those who won’t,

  • …. since I realize you are against God and his authority and not so much against me let me withdraw from this discussion and leave it between you both.

  • I am not against you or God. I will determine my feelings for God if I ever discover he exists.

  • Proof of a general unidentified deity or a specific god – such as Jehovah? The former is impossible to prove either way. Its easy to put doubt in the existence of Jehovah due to the easy-to-disprove bible – which should cast sufficient doubt in his existence.

  • Frankly, I’m positive his resignation would prove beyond doubt that God exists!!! ???

  • Again we should note: This crackpot dictator has been promoting rape, violence, and outright mass murder for YEARS. But only now that he’s insulted religion are people suddenly outraged. Priorities, people.

  • Against god and not so much against me….

    Says it all.

How dare you disagree with me when I speak for god?

  • Duterte asks “who is this stupid God?” Here is another question. How does belief in an all-knowing/loving/powerful god square with scientific facts such as humans are mostly composed of bacteria, viruses, fungi and archaea, see less than 1 percent of the light spectrum, have sub-optimal plumbing (breathing, eating, excretory and reproductive) and are programmed to die? Additionally, at least 40 percent of animal species are parasites, and over 99 percent of all species that ever lived are extinct….

  • Cue the “All Atheists are Just Like Duterte” Screeds in 3 2 1

  • How can you have the audacity to claim to know what all atheists do or do not care about?

  • That does not really speak to whether or not there is a god (and I say that as an atheist)…any given god could enjoy causing death or destruction. Maybe Cthulu reigns and is waiting to clutch El Presidente in his tentacle.

  • from where have we “removed prayer?”

Where does the Bible outlaw transgendered?

“giving rights to those who do not have the ability to discern between what should and shouldn’t be done.”

    You mean Congress?

  • This is a fallacy of Argument from Popularity. Just because a thing is popular does not say anything about it’s veracity.

  • “How [then] can [these atheists] have the audacity to claim to know what all atheists do or do not care about?” Learning from the best, I’m talking about:

    Daniel Fincke
    Jurgen Habermas
    David Hoelscher
    Sikivu Hutchinson
    Stephen LeDrew
    Frank Pasquale
    CJ Werleman

  • How can you have the audacity to claim to know what all atheists do or do not care about based on seven obscure supposed atheists?

I’ve never heard of these guys.

  • I can’ have any fun with you Ben – I was hoping one of the holy rollers would respond….

  • Well, you could just send Ryan over and not tell my husband. I could at least have some fun.

  • If, to you, “Daniel Fincke / Jurgen Habermas / David Hoelscher / Sikivu Hutchinson / Stephen LeDrew / Frank Pasquale / CJ Werleman”, whom “[you]’ve never heard of”, are “seven obscure … atheists” – then name me those whom “[you]’ve … heard of”, that, to you, aren’t at all “seven obscure … atheists”.

  • Despite what you say or what “the book” says, in society, scientifically and historically, 5-10% of the population has always been Gay Folks. It is pure science and perfectly normal. If there is a God, then he did this. If there isn’t a god, then it’s pure science – either way, you have to accept us, we are not going any where.

  • I know this thread is pretty much gone. But don’t forget, there’s a rational reason why atheism is at the bottom of the American religious totem pole. That rational reason happens to be, well, the fact that most everybody IS rational, and they see what’s happening these days.

The Bible says that there’s evidence for God’s existence (Romans 1:20), and a person can catch this just by looking at the created world all around them. And many have done so, even among Non-Christians. Modern biology has publicly turned against atheism, even among those who choose to believe in evolution.

Christian scholars have learned how to base-hit every curveball that atheists have thrown on their no-homework websites. And that’s on top of the in-house disagreements among atheists themselves.

  • Which, in theory, means you’re going to wait 3 seconds after death, stand there at the judgment bar of God right in front of Him (Heb.9:27), and then figure out your feelings for Him while he delivers the final judgment right there.

You will have to sort out your feelings rather quickly, I suspect. Me, I think it’s better to acknowledge God exists (today), and get hooked up with Jesus Christ by faith (today). Much less stressful.

  • It is not likely that either you or I will have that experience. 3 seconds after we die we’ll be dead. Our soul or consciousness cannot survive without its body. Trying to follow the ancient values from the Bible, and being constantly afraid you might have the wrong interpretation or your not living your life or your religious practice as Jesus wants you to makes this, and most likely our only, life very stressful. Of course many Christians avoid this with strong faith. No matter what interpretation or sect they have found, they pretend it is the true one. By pretending hard enough they can even convince themselves that they are correct. This is the strong faith that overcomes stress.

  • adam and eve was originally intended as a story, but people have taken it literally. Much of the Old Testament was simply fictitious imo, but Jesus of course was a historical figure and there’s actual proof of his existence and his teachings are therefore the ones we should listen to

  • Long history of indoctrination and the human need to feel secure when he does not understand something. I googled arguments for god. Most said the universe is so complicated there must be a god directing it
So if I can not understand something it must be god?

  • Did you know MEN decided which books to include at what to throw out. They left out some of gods word. What’s up with that.
Religion is just crowd control of the oldest variety.

  • I shall remain agnostic. The Bible was written by men and the history within the pages are a horror—slavery, women abuse, homophobia, misogyny, and so forth. Not to metion fairy tales of a virgin giving birth, snakes talking, giants coming down from the hevens to have sexual relationships with wome, the devil, hell—so much simply to control,

  • It is very easy to prove that Duterte is correct, that is (1) there is no God and (2) no body is a sinner. In fact Bible itself says both of them are correct.

Bible says – “What you sow is what you reap”. This means you do not have freewill. This then means you are guided by destiny. Bible also has verses about destiny. Since we are controlled by destiny, that means we do not choose, everything is chosen for us. Therefore no one can be a sinner. Life is completely planned.

Destiny law also says everything is precisely predictable, naturally so, since completely planned events can be known. Any high level yogi, with the power of third eye, can exactly tell you, what will happen to you, moment by moment. Destiny can be predicted even before you are born. There are many such examples of predictions on the internet. Since life is predictable, God does not have any role in our life. Meaning there is no such God, since God by definition cannot be controlled by destiny and predicted by humans. For more on destiny, take a look at the free book on soul theory at
