Real + True, a new global project inspired by the Catechism of the Catholic Church launches today

Real + True

Real + True features videos in multiple languages and innovative content to present the Catechism of the Catholic Church as a living voice for the modern world.

Real + True, a new global project around the Catechism of the Catholic Church, launched today with a mission to share the gift of the Catholic faith through beautiful, captivating, and relevant content inspired by the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The content is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, and accessible for free to people worldwide.

“We believe the Catechism is not a textbook, a collection of ideas, or a set of rules. We believe the Catechism is the faithful echo of a God who wishes to reveal himself to us and desires us to respond,” said Edmund Mitchell, cofounder of Real + True. “We hope our content unlocks the beauty and wisdom of the Catechism for modern women and men — and most of all, helps people discover its pulsating heart: Jesus Christ.”

Real + True will engage with Millennial and Gen Z audiences around the world through videos, social content, and a podcast. New content will be published in monthly units, each covering a section of the Catechism, with 12 units for each of its four pillars. Parishes, dioceses, apostolates, and ministries worldwide can incorporate the videos and content in their catechetical and evangelization programs and efforts.

At launch, Unit 1 (covering the first 25 paragraphs of the Catechism) is available at realtrue.org and on YouTube. Unit 2 will be released on Oct. 1, 2021, and Unit 3 will be available on Nov. 1, 2021.

“We are excited to bring the combined effort of creatives and catechetical experts to this project to launch something truly innovative to the Church today, especially as we approach the 30th anniversary of the publication of the current Catechism in 2022,” said Emily Mentock, cofounder of Real + True.

Real + True advisors include some of the most respected names in catechesis and evangelization: Bishop Andrew Cozzens, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis; Bishop Kevin Rhoades, bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend and Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Doctrine; Bishop David Ricken, bishop of Green Bay; Stacey Noem, Gloria Purvis, Julianne Stanz, Sherry Weddell, Dr. Hosffman Ospino, Dr. Robert Rice, Scott P. Richert, Rev. Stephen Pullis, Rev. Agustino Torres, CFR, Dr. Joseph White, and Dr. Petroc Willey.

“Sound catechesis is always rooted in Christ; it should lead people to know and love Christ, and its message should change the hearts of those who receive it,” said Dr. Petroc Willey, Director of the Catechetical Institute at Franciscan University and Real + True advisor. “This project is a fine and creative example of the evangelizing catechesis called for by the new Directory for Catechesis.

The name ‘Real + True’ is a reference to the real and true God, according to the project’s founders.

“In Jesus, God is real. He is someone, not something. He’s a person who knows us and understands us,” said Edmundo Reyes, cofounder of Real + True. “He walked this earth and showed us how to live and love. He is also the Truth, and his light guides our path.”

The team of Real + True includes three cofounders: Emily Mentock, Edmund Mitchell, and Edmundo Reyes; JP Talty, lead animator; Phil Hetue, graphic design, and web development; Jose Manuel de Urquidi, Spanish and Portuguese lead; and Aleteia, French lead. Learn more at realtrue.org/team.

“The world today is hungry for Jesus and for his message of truth, hope, and love. I am pleased to see projects such as Real + True emerge, bringing innovation and excellence to the way our faith is presented to the young women and men of our Church and the world,” said Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, Chairman of the OSV Board.
