Cathy Lynn Grossman, a longtime religion and ethics reporter at USA Today, has joined the staff of Religion News Service as senior national correspondent and manager of social media.
In her new position at RNS, Grossman will focus on surveys and drill down into public opinion polls, exploring changes in religion, culture are society. She will also help manage social media outreach for RNS and contribute a blog.
“Cathy is one of the legends on the religion beat and we are thrilled to have her join the RNS team,” said RNS Editor-in-Chief Kevin Eckstrom. “With several key hires in recent months, RNS is positioned to build on its 80-year history of covering some of the most important — and interesting — stories in the world.”
Within the past two years, RNS has amassed a reporting and editing team with expertise spanning many faith traditions. That team includes David Gibson, Sarah Pulliam Bailey, Adelle Banks, Yonat Shimron, Lauren Markoe and Kimberly Winston.
A graduate of Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, Grossman spent 17 years at the Miami Herald. She covered the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and the 1976 Entebbe Rescue. She wrote and directed prize-winning feature projects, and was assistant editor of the Living Today section.
She was chosen for the 2005 Templeton-Cambridge Journalism Fellowship where her thesis was on the rhetoric of death and dying.Â
In May 2013, Grossman completed a yearlong certificate course in biomedical ethics and health care policy from the Center for Practical Bioethics, Kansas City, Mo.Â
