Tuesday’s religion round up

Opposing religious coalitions are gearing up for Maine’s gay marriage referendum, South Carolina Episcopalians are considering distancing their diocese from the Episcopal Church, and trustees at the University of Notre Dame re-elected the Rev. John Jenkins for a second five-year term as president.

Jews in South Carolina are upset that Republican officials used Jewish stereotypes in a letter to the editor, and a federal judge said a Pennsylvanian teen can wear an anti-abortion T-shirt to school. Atheism is coming to NYC subways and faith healer Benny Hinn says most faith healers are frauds. The governor of New Jersey, who is running for re-election, donated $87,000 to a politically powerful pastor.

The Vatican unveiled plans to make it easier for Anglicans upset with female and gay bishops to convert. Madonna says Israel “is the energy center of the world,” and Beyonce has postponed her show in Malaysia after Muslims called her act immoral.

No paywalls here. Thanks to you.
As an independent nonprofit, RNS believes everyone should have access to coverage of religion that is fair, thoughtful and inclusive. That's why you will never hit a paywall on our site; you can read all the stories and columns you want, free of charge (and we hope you read a lot of them!)

But, of course, producing this journalism carries a high cost, to support the reporters, editors, columnists, and the behind-the-scenes staff that keep this site up and running. That's why we ask that if you can, you consider becoming one of our donors. Any amount helps, and because we're a nonprofit, all of it goes to support our mission: To produce thoughtful, factual coverage of religion that helps you better understand the world. Thank you for reading and supporting RNS.
